The Italian Pointer, or Bracco Italiano, is a breed of dog that combines elegance and sturdiness. Originating from Italy, this dog is appreciated for its versatility and balanced temperament.
The Bracco Italiano is a medium to large-sized dog, generally weighing between 25 and 40 kilograms. Males stand between 58 and 67 centimeters at the withers, while females are slightly smaller, ranging from 55 to 62 centimeters in height. Its coat can display various shades from pure white to white with orange or brown patches, often in a harmonious distribution that highlights its athletic silhouette.
Historically, the Bracco Italiano is a hunting dog. Its keen sense of smell, endurance, and speed make it an excellent dog for hunting in plains, mountains, or marshy areas. It is particularly effective for bird hunting.
Beyond hunting, the Bracco Italiano is also used as a companion dog, thanks to its affectionate nature and ability to form strong bonds with its owner. It is also involved in canine sports activities, such as agility, where it can demonstrate great agility and good coordination. Although it is not the most common in the roles of guard dog, therapy dog, assistance dog, or working dog, its intelligence and eagerness to please make it capable of being trained for these functions.
