The Poitevin is a breed of dog named after the Poitou region of France. It is best known for its hunting capabilities but also possesses qualities that make it a good companion.
The Poitevin sports a tricolor coat, with black patches on a white background and tan markings above the eyes, on the cheeks, and sometimes on the legs. It is a large breed, with males measuring between 62 and 72 centimeters at the withers and females slightly smaller. The weight ranges from 25 to 30 kilograms, making it a well-proportioned, large-sized dog.
Historically, the Poitevin has been used as a hunting dog, particularly for pack hunting. Its great speed and endurance allow it to follow game over long distances. Although it is not traditionally used as a therapy or assistance dog, its calm temperament and sociable nature could make it suitable for these roles with proper training. As a guard dog, it is not the most indicated due to its lack of aggressiveness. However, it can be an excellent companion dog for active families who can provide enough exercise.
