The Hovawart is a large, robust, and athletic dog. It weighs between 30 and 45 kilograms, with males ranging in height from 58 to 70 centimeters at the withers, and females from 55 to 65 centimeters. Its coat comes in three colors: black, black and tan, or blonde. The fur is long, dense, and slightly wavy, providing good protection against the weather.
Historically, the Hovawart has been used as a guard and defense dog. Its strong presence and protective instinct make it an excellent guardian. Although it is not traditionally a hunting dog, its intelligence and sense of smell can be utilized in this activity.
Due to its balanced temperament and loyal nature, the Hovawart is also valued as a companion dog. It is capable of forming close bonds with its family and is known to be particularly good with children. Its attentive and sensitive nature also makes it suitable as a therapy and assistance dog, where it can provide emotional and practical support.
