The Grand Bleu de Gascogne is a French dog breed distinguished by its elegance and noble bearing. It is a large dog, known for its distinctive coat and rich history as a skilled hunter.
The Grand Bleu de Gascogne sports a unique mottled blue coat with black patches that may form patterns reminiscent of the map of Gascogne. Tan markings on the cheeks, ears, and above the eyes add to its charm. Males typically measure between 65 and 72 cm at the withers and weigh between 35 and 40 kg, while females are a bit smaller and lighter.
Historically, the Grand Bleu de Gascogne is an excellent hunting dog, used for pack hunting, particularly for game such as deer and wild boar. Its deep and melodious voice is highly appreciated by hunters. Although it is not traditionally used as a therapy or assistance dog, its calm and patient temperament could make it suitable for these roles.
As a guard dog, it can be a deterrent due to its size and bark, but it is not naturally aggressive. As a companion dog, it is gentle and loyal, though it requires space to exercise. The Grand Bleu de Gascogne is not specifically recognized as a sporting or assistance dog, but it can participate in canine sports activities thanks to its endurance.
