The Greyhound, also known as the English Greyhound, is a breed of dog distinguished by its slender silhouette and exceptional speed. It is one of the oldest types of hunting dogs, with depictions dating back to antiquity.
The Greyhound’s coat can vary greatly in color, including black, white, red, blue, fawn, brindle, or a combination of these colors. Its skin is thin, and it has a short coat, which requires minimal grooming. In terms of size, males typically measure between 71 and 76 centimeters at the withers, while females are slightly smaller. The weight ranges from 27 to 40 kilograms, reflecting their light and muscular structure, optimized for speed.
Traditionally, the Greyhound has been used as a hunting dog due to its ability to run at high speeds and its keen vision, allowing it to spot prey from a distance. Nowadays, although it is less used for hunting, it excels in canine sports such as greyhound racing and agility. As a companion dog, it is valued for its calm and affectionate temperament. It is not commonly used as a guard dog due to its non-aggressive temperament. However, its gentle nature can make it a good therapy dog, and it is sometimes used as an assistance dog.
