The Field Spaniel's coat is long, flat or slightly wavy, with well-developed fringes. The texture of the hair is dense and resistant to bad weather. Common colors include black, liver (brown), sunrise (combination of brown and white), and roan blue (mixture of black and white hairs).

The head is proportionate to the rest of the body, with a moderately broad skull. The muzzle is square and well chiseled. The eyes are oval in shape, dark in color, expressing intelligence and gentleness. The ears are set low and are of medium length. The Field Spaniel is a lively, intelligent dog with a developed sense of smell.
